What is Celiac Disease?

Celiac Disease is a condition in which a person cannot tolerate and is allergic to gluten. Gluten can be found in wheat, barley, bran, rye, and oats*. If a person who is diagnosed with celiac disease eats gluten, his or her body begins to destroy villi in the small intestine. Villi are tiny extensions of the small intestine that allow nutrients to be absorbed from food into the bloodstream. Damaged villi leads to sickness and malnourishment because the body faces a shortage of nutrients . As of now, the only way to avoid this damage and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is by eating a gluten-free diet.

*There are some oats that are certified gluten-free- they would be suitable for those with celiac disease
